Vertical Worship – “If I Have You” (Devotional)
Choose your weapons wisely- Ephesians 6:17
All of humanity is in search of identity; a trait to be recognized by; a community to confirm significance. The prevalence of social media complicates this search exponentially. The ability to view the daily lives of those around us is available at all times during the day. Witnessing the beautiful, glamorous, seemingly idyllic moments of anotherΓÇÖs life can breed discontentment much like taking a match to a pile of fall leaves.
But, the compliments, recognitions, and accomplishments of this world will not provide worth. The most prestigious awards will not provide significance. Luxury and wealth will not provide security. Worth, significance, security can all be discovered by knowing God and being found in Him. The battle for identity rages, and we must fight against it.
Choose your weapons wisely
In the same way that Jesus used the Word of God to withstand against the devilΓÇÖs temptations in Matthew 4, the believer can fight against the war for his soul by utilizing the Bible. There is power in the Word of God to withstand any temptation, any hardship, and any flaming dart of the evil one.
Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me.
Psalm 119:98
Jesus could use the Bible to fight against temptation because he KNEW GodΓÇÖs words. The ΓÇ£sword of the spiritΓÇ¥ is most effective when it is known.
As soldiers in this battle, we must study the Word of God, meditating on its truth, and applying that truth to daily life.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
When facing a battle for your heart, for your identity, for your joy, choose your weapons wisely. Choose the weapon that pierces the division of the soul. Choose the weapon that is living, active, and sharper than any sword.
Today, which verse will you memorize to use as a weapon on your battlefront? If you have that two-edged sword and nothing else, then you have everything.
